French Love Poetry

Imagine yourself in a balcony overlooking the bright city lights with the arms of your loved one wrapped around you. This is enough to make you feel cherished, right? Well, what if he is also murmuring a love poem and you can feel that every word is coming right out of his heart? Okay. The scene may be cheesy but you should admit that it has the romance part down. And what if the poem is in French? It has been claimed before and there is no harm in repeating. French, to lots of people, is the most romantic language.

What is so great about French love poetry is that it takes things to a whole new level. Somehow, it makes the words come out alive and the emotions heightened. It is no wonder why several men use French love poetry to woe the women they love. They borrow words from Victor Hugo, Paul Verlaine, Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Louise Labe, and other famous French poets known especially for their love poems.

We have included two samples which we feel are good enough to make you agree that the French really deserves a high point when it comes to creating heartfelt love poems.

Tears Fall In My Heart
Paul Verlaine

Tears fall in my heart
Rain falls on the town;
what is this numb hurt
that enters my heart?
Ah ,the soft sound of rain
on roofs, on the ground!
To a dulled heart they came,
ah, the song of the rain!
Tears without reason
in the disheartened heart.
What? no trace of treason?
This grief’s without reason.
It’s far the worst pain
to never know why
without love or disdain
my heart has such pain!

A Memory
Marceline Desbordes-Valmore

When he grew pale, and his voice trembled,
And suddenly he could no longer speak;
When his eyes, burning beneath the lid,
Gave me a wound I thought he felt alike;
When all his charms, lighted by a fire
That has never faded,
Were printed in the depth of my desire,
He did not love. I did.
